We made a very interesting visit to the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) where Jenny Benson the Supporter Engagement Coordinator made us very welcome with tea and biscuits. She gave a very comprehensive talk on how the GWAAC gives support to the Great Western Air Ambulance. The charity is a separate organisation with the task of obtaining the funding to run the air ambulance activity, like the RNLI it is funded totally voluntarily. It is called the Air Ambulance but in fact three critical care vehicles are also run and in 2023 actually provided 73% of the 1,973 call outs. Each call-out costs an average £2,000. Jenny emphasised that the aim was to get critical care to the patient and stabilise the casualty as quickly as possible before transferring to a suitable hospital for further treatment. She called it “taking the hospital to the patient”. Following the introductory talk we were given a tour of the facility with a look at the helicopter and the critical care vehicles, both similarly equipped with all that is needed to care for the casualty. We were lucky enough to be invited to interrupt a training session where the doctors were practicing resuscitation technique on a dummy. A fascinating visit to a wonderful organisation.

Time for a cream tea!
We enjoyed a buffet at the Chipping Sodbury Golf Club. Lots of sandwiches and scones with lashings of clotted cream and strawberry jam.

June 8th 2023 A visit to Glenside Hospital Museum.
March 30th 2023 was a Ladies Day so after the excellent talk on gardening by John Tucker we retired to the Horseshoe Inn in Downend for a communal meal. 27 of us sat down to a pleasant meal served by the lovely waitresses. The kitchen struggled a bit to accommodate all the different choices of meals but the slight delays allowed us to enjoy a good social time together. Thanks to Mike B for the organisation, a pity he was unwell on the day and missed the chance to chat and take a bow.
